In the past decade, Fibromyalgia has become more widely known and more and more research is being done on a daily basis to help manage Fibromyalgia pain and to possibly, someday even discover a cure. Just recently as of January of 2009, the FDA approved another medication helped to treat Fibromyalgia. This new drug is known as Savella or Milnacipran. Savella is a SNRI or serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor which does include some antidepressants. The FDA approved this medicine after two clinical trials were done involving 2,084 Fibromyalgia patients that took Savella and a placebo. Patients that took Savella saw a significant increase in pain relief, overall fibromyalgia improvement, and improved physical function.
Savella has only been approved for adults. It carries the same “black box” risk that is in other antidepressants that there is an increased risk of suicidal thinking and behavior in individuals under the age of 24. Savella also carries some other side effects such as: dry mouth, increased heart rate, nausea, hot flush, sweating, vomiting, palpitations, and high blood pressure. Savella is also not recommended if you are taking MAOI’S. Combining these two medications can have very adverse effects.
To get the best results, contact your physician before taking Savella and always take as prescribed. If you are a Fibromyalgia patient, this could possibly be a miracle drug that could greatly enhance your quality of life.
